The hiring process can be challenging. Add to that finding the right people for your unique c-store operation, and the challenges become two-fold. Inc.com offers this startling statistic: “Approximately 46 percent of new hires fail within the first 18 months.” Let’s take a look at how to find – and keep – the most qualified candidates.
Look for stability. “The best employees are consistent, stable, and reliable,” says Inc.com. Even if a candidate’s glowing resume catches your eye, be sure to ask the difficult questions. How long have they held one job? If they’re a chronic job changer, that’s a red flag.
Take the time to interview as many candidates as you need to find the person who meets your expectations. Don’t hire someone just to fill an empty counter. You’ll be losing money in the end.
Call the references! It might seem like an unnecessary step of the interview process, but you won’t go wrong calling candidates’ references. And if you haven’t requested at least three references who are not related to the interviewee, start asking! You’ll learn about who the person truly is from people they interact with on a daily basis.
No matter what type of position you’re looking to fill, we hope these tips can help get you started in the right direction to create the ultimate team of outstanding employees.
