A report by the American Trucking Associations released in the summer of 2018 found that the country was short more than 50,000 tractor-trailer drivers. That number is expected to balloon to 174,000 by 2026 and may go even higher if something isn’t done to curb the problem, fast. There are plenty of opinions on why trucking is losing ground. Some experts say low wages are to blame, while others blame increased government regulations. Others blame millennials and Gen Z for wanting cushy, technology jobs that allow them to work from anywhere.
It’s true that each of these factors may contribute to the country’s growing trucker shortage, but we’re of the opinion there’s too much talk and too little action. If petroleum marketers and other industry professionals don’t come together and develop solutions, the problem is only going to get worse. We don’t want that to happen.
