Now that 2021 is officially here, it’s time to reflect on the last 12 months. By assessing your business’s strengths and weaknesses, you can implement changes that will build trust, increase foot traffic and help you navigate a post-COVID-19 world. If you’re unsure where to begin, that’s okay. We’ve compiled a list of three areas worth focusing on.
1.) Display your commitment to safety. Vaccines are starting to roll out, but most experts agree that mass inoculation will take until at least June and maybe even longer. If you want to build trust with your client base, advertise your commitment to safety. If possible, provide hand sanitizer, masks and gloves to customers who need it. Continue to enforce social distancing and post signage that encourages customers to “look with their eyes and not their hands.” Don’t forget about routine cleaning, either. Every half hour or so, wipe down countertops, door handles and credit card machines. Do the same at gas pumps and outdoor card readers.
2.) Fight back against cybercrime. During 2020, nearly two-thirds of Americans who purchased gas were a victim of card skimming. That’s a 23% increase from 2019! If your filling station doesn’t already have security measures in place, it’s time to take action. The Texas Food & Fuel Association recommends investing in anti-breach kits for pumps, purchasing or upgrading fuel dispensers that have a separate compartment for receipt rollers and installing CCTV cameras at each and every pump.
3.) Give your customers what they want. A growing number of Americans want access to convenient snacks and meals that are healthy and nutritious. A study conducted in 2020 by the National Association of Convenience Stores found that 70% of retailers have experienced a boost in “better-for-you” product sales, including fruit slices, salads and dairy-free milks. You don’t have to overhaul your c-store entirely, but it’s a good idea to stock natural foods in addition to the traditional candies, chips and snacks.
By following these tips in 2021, you can help your filling station stand out from the crowd. Would you add anything to our list? If so, visit our Facebook page and leave a comment.
